“Of course things are tough at the moment but I think that’s even more reason for being
pro-active. Touch wood we have had a brilliant year but we have all worked really hard to make
things happen. I have also stuck my neck out and opened a new department targeting the
younger consumer; on trend and price sensitive. I’ve hired two university graduates to head the
department and they are really running with it, Facebooking and emailing customers and it’s been
great.
We are always thinking how we can make our customers engage with the shop; we have monthly
events, designer’s presentations, fashion shows, charity-linked events. We also as a team make
sure we keep abreast of what’s happening by keeping up to date with the media; we were recently
shortlisted for the Regional Fashion Retail Awards for the Telegraph magazine voted by our
customers and we keep a copy of the IFF Directory on the shelves; its useful as a point of
reference. While nobody is saying its easy out there, it is possible to do well in the current business
climate; we are up 16 per cent. However it is essential to keep generating ideas and not just be
sitting there wondering why people aren’t walking through the door.”
