Trend Reports

The IFF trend reports provide key trend information for the fashion industry.

Introduction
Looking back and looking forward, this season four very different forms of inspiration dictate Autumn/Winter 2010/11’s trends. First up is VISION, which looks forward to a futuristic modernity than instead of being cold and clinical is instead all about comfort. EPOCH looks back rather than forward, referencing the roaring 20’s and the easy going casual glamour of the 70’s. All this is tied up with a return to childhood and a pleasing sense of naivetι, best expressed in prints and proportions. ANTHOLOGY also references the past but in a more sophisticated way; instead looking at noble ancestors, the Edwardian shooting party and the nobility of nature. Finally METROPOLIS jumps to the future once again with a look at the modern city landscape in all its glory, honing in on the way shapes change and morph at night in an urban setting. This trend has a rebellious side and feels like stepping into the unknown.

Anthology
Rugged Refinement
As nostalgia moves deeper into the roots of history, we draw inspiration from the loved and cherished artefacts of our noble ancestors. Rich textures collide with a sense of rugged refinement as well-travelled collecting helps us curate our lives. Here aristocracy blends with the nobility of nature to create new histories. A luxurious curio of supple, cosy texture is accented by nightfall hues. Inspiration is also drawn from the classic Edwardian shooting party; combining hard working shapes with a privileged elegance. Finally the mountains call as a selection of electric accents take us on a Siberian trek to view a mountainous landscape.

For fabrics, think luxurious gypsy; canvas, denim, thick blanket textures, tweed, antique tapestry and brocades, ornate jacquards, wool gabardine and shadow pinstripe. These are contrasted by silk and satin, velvet and velveteen and cosy knits including Fairisle and folkloric intarsia. Print and pattern is ornate and bold, painterly florals, plaid, folkloric motifs, leopard skin prints and themes taken from nature; autumn leaves and forest scenes.

Clothing is eclectic and nomadic; belted trench coats and Spencer jackets work with simple vests, shawl and cascade blouses. Dresses are belted sheafs or chemises, while pants are pleated and tapered or loose and cuffed or cropped. Fairisle cardigans and tunics or heavy pullovers add comfort while jeans feature heavy stitching. Fur and fringing appear as does fabric mixing and blocking.

Accessories play with tradition; deer hunters, fur collared boots and buckle detailed bags evoke shooting party style, while jewelled collars, status bags and cloche hats exude low key status. There are also references to ethnic styling with woolly hats and folksy motifs.

Epoch
Casual & Chic
Ushering in an era of fanciful reverie, Epoch brings the chance to embrace daydreams. As the world become more fast-paced, we take solace in the faded romance and theatricality of surreal fairy tales and the roaring 20’s. With this trend, playground antics return us to childhood with a pleasing sense of naivetι.

Fabrics are fanciful and sensual; velvet, chiffon, lace and tulle, silky sheer jersey, shimmering knits. Sequinned and beaded detailing is juxtaposed by more robust fabrics including flannel, corduroy and denim. Leather also makes an appearance as does suede, and is often laser cut. Prints and patterns are romantic and naοve; inspired by wallpaper and tapestry, stripes, checks, especially oversized plaids and whimsical hand drawn motifs that reference childhood scribbles. Dots and florals also have a part to play.

When it comes to silhouettes; this is where 20’s glamour meets 70’s casual with couture and trench coats, cropped smoking jackets and school girl blazers worn over flapper dresses, slips and shirt-waisters. The feminine blouse is a key piece, along with fluid satin pants, jump suits and cuffed shorts. Skirts have ruffles and tiers or are bias cut and dirndl. Knits are sweet and feminine; the neat cardigan, the twin set and the tight jumper. Detailing is important with this trend, so consider sequins and beads, ruffles, spangles, feathers, fringes, crochet and lace insets.

Accessories strongly reference vintage with little old lady handbags, cocktail rings, ladylike gloves, fabric and chain necklaces, sweet flat pumps and cheeky floral detailing.

Metropolis
Urban & Seductive
The sun sets on the modern city as the dark expanse of the urban landscape unfolds in Metropolis. Utilitarian function and the sharp lines of dark alleys combine with the slick exclusivity of the dense, ever-moving city to create a sense of beckoning mystery. With a rebellious side, this trend ventures into the unknown, as industrial structures decay and the city is overgrown in oxidised tones of sepia and shadow. A new order is formed as constructivist rigidity and clandestine adornments bring out the rich tones of nightfall.

Fabrics are slick, functional and edgy; coated and boiled wool, cavalry twill, distressed and oxidised or metallic leather, tweed, shadow stripe, velvet and canvas, lace chiffon and georgette. Jersey is burned, shredded and embellished while knits are thermal and ribbed. Denim has a metallic sheen. Print plays with retro-future classics; dark, romantic florals, pinstripes, industrial revolution posters, geometrics inspired by bold, modern art and the macabre; night birds and bats, gothic silhouettes.

Clothing has a utilitarian edge and plays with ideas of glamour grunge. Parkas and trenches, biker and double-breasted boxy jackets are worn over vests, both knitted and biker inspired or dresses with sexy cutouts, contoured seaming and blocking. Look out for the utility shirt, the body suit, utility cargo pants, jump suits and mini or stretch pencil skirts. Knits focus on v-necked pullovers, military styles and cropped tanks worn over skinny jeans.

Accessories include multi-chain necklaces, industrial look cuffs, constructivist jewellery, studs on bags and shoes, killer heels or embellished biker boots. Most of all metal jewellery exudes a relentless, hard edge.

• Functional & edgy fabrics
• Retro-future classic prints
• Utilitarian meets glamour grunge
• Protective, metallic & glam detailing
• Lace & mesh blocking
• Destroyed denim, distressed looks

Vision
Realism & Comfort
As we are catapulted into an uncertain future, Vision brings with it both progress and familiarity to the forefront. Futuristic modernity diverts from cold, sterile perfection taking instead a turn towards realism and comfort. Essentially, Vision is inspired by the rigid structures of architecture and ice meeting the soft curves of the human form. This trend also puts the accent on modern comfort, with neutrals gaining a feminine warmth while accented by synthetic finishes and fizzy brights. Conversely inspiration is found in the glacial earth with geodesic shadow accents projecting a cocooning sense of tranquillity.

Fabrics include felt, bulky woollens, gabardine, fleece and fluid jersey contrasting satin, air spun yarns, leather and fur. Print focuses on irregular geometrics, linear and cellular patterns, marbelised effects and frozen motifs.

Fashion combines both structure and fluidity with wrap coats or belted trenches, boxy and double breasted blazers, simple sheaf and layered asymmetrical dresses. Tops to look out for include the blocked T-shirt, voluminous blouses and tailored shirts worn with stretch cigarette pants, cuffed shorts or short length skirts. Jeans are predominantly skinny or made from suede to give tactile interest. The sweater features prominently as does the oversized cardigan. The overall look is all about gentle folding and draping, asymmetrical volume, a certain blurred transparency and tiered layering.

When it comes to accessories, consider furry hats, angular crystal rings, pale padded handbags with simplistic and pure lines, kidskin gloves, slouchy handbags and crystalline necklaces integrating quartz into the designs.

• Feminine warmth
• Fabrics are technical yet gentle
• Print & pattern play with futurism & nature
• Structured & fluid silhouettes
• Pleating & layering
